He hasn't ever been around the grill yet. I don't want him to learn by burning his nose, but I want to teach him to stay away from the heat. I forgot how I taught my other Shepherds in the past, but it can be enjoyable to cook out with your dog outside with you.

If he doesn't sense the danger from the heat, tell him gently "no." The instant he obeys, give him praise. "Good!"

If he continues to show interest in the grill, try distracting him with something more fun and interesting, like a ball and a game of fetch.

A good way to train a young dog is to swat them gently, but firmly with a rolled-up newspaper, on the snout, saying "NO!", with a firm, commanding voice, each time he goes near the grill. He should soon get the message that it is a no-no, to go there.

I have 4 dogs and never had to teach them to stay away from the grill. The heat and fire seem to be enough. They get just close enough to feel the heat coming off it and back off and go about there business.
