Because we have junk, and we need somewhere to put it!

Honestly, I don't have a garage or a basement, but my closets are pretty full. I took the opportunity to purge when we downsized homes a couple of years ago!

Our society has developed into an "I must have it" type of situation...Whatever that thing is, we all gotta get it! But we're not very good at getting rid of the things that we don't need anymore. Some of it is the fear that we might need it later, and we don't want to pay for another one, when there's a perfectly good one already in our homes. Some of it is also finding (making?) the time to go through the old boxes of things, to see what you can or cannot live without.

Recently, one of my coworkers moved...When he came back to the office after the long weekend of moving, we asked him if he had gotten everything moved in. He replied, "Oh, heck no!", and told us that whatever boxes were still in his garage were going to stay there for the time being...and that any of those boxes that were still there after a year would be thrown away, without even looking inside. If I haven't used it in a year, he says, I probably don't need it. I think he had a really good point!

I can tell you its not just americans who do these. there are other countries though many of them dont have the convienance of a garage or basement they still have areas stuffed with items they dont use.

Im one of the few people that I know of who continually purges my stuff on a yearly basis. I hate clutter but I also have a bad habit of collecting and keeping magazines for a year, usually with the thought of thats a nice idea I can include in the garden etc but it usually doesnt happen. So I toss hundreds of magazines out each year into the recycle bin.

North Americans are usually very materialistic. Because they always need to buy the newest of everything, always need more, more, more, to keep up with the Jones' " as they say.
I think alot of people are just of their old things and afraid to throw things away and are hanging on to memories and don't know when to let go.

i think we buy whatever we want and don't always have a real need for this junk...so we hang on to it to soothe our conscience for spending on crap.Just in case we need it later. it piles up and piles up and people just don't know what to do with it...
