Finally moving on after the entire debacle with my friend A, I was asked out to dinner by a guy I'd known through mutual friends. We had always shared eye contact and smiled at each other, so I was happy when he asked. I had a great time, and even though I sincerely offered, he insisted upon paying. We hugged each other goodbye, and I was hoping to see him again.

Sure enough, he asked me out again to a movie, and afterward, we went for a walk since the weather was so nice that night. Since he hadn't made any moves physically, I wasn't sure if he wanted more than friendship until he said, "I always seem to wind up in the friend-zone with girls I like." I thought he was referring to me misinterpreting his shyness, but then he started to talk about some girl he'd liked for a year who he considered to be his best friend!

Does anyone have any idea why he would do this? Am I just going insane or has dating truly become this unstraightforward?

TIP: Guys love it when girls make the first move. If ur interested in him, let him know right away and take the "friend Zone" out of the equation. Good luck

I realize that your question is why this guy isn't moving fast enough for you. Maybe I misread your question but it seems you were on your second date when he made his comment about the friend-zone. It's true that he may end up in the friend-zone with you because you want him to take the initiative and he wants to take it slow. Probably some girls are like you and give up thinking of him as boyfriend material because he's not taking the lead. In his mind, however, what makes a boyfriend-girlfriend situation take off is compatibility and you can't possibly know that after just the second date. Why not give him a chance to get to know you while you do the same, get to know him? He may be your soul mate but that realization might not come until 2 months from now at a party when both of you realize that you do know each other better and you are happy with what you have found! What's your hurry? You can date other people too, just don't give up on this one.

This story sounds kind of familiar.

It sounds to be like he's a little insecure and a little shy of making the first move. By mentioning this 'other girl', he's probably trying to explain to you that that's what usually happens to him and he'd rather it not happen anymore - thus he chose you.

Make a move.

It seems he is insecure about the dating and friendship. About the only thing you can do is talk to him. He should be honest with you.
