My family believes that my fathers mother was euthanized because when she was in hospital the Doctor gave her a needle (supposedly to relax her, as he said), but she died a few minutes later, we could not prove it but we know in our hearts that is what happened

I don`t think Euthanasia is horrible at all .
Letting someone who is dying and in pain, suffer ,is .
I personally have a supply of pills that I will take if the pain ever gets to a point that I can`t take it anymore .
If the outcome is terminal and an excruciating death will be the only outcome ,let the person decide when enough is enough .I would not let my pets suffer ,so why should I.

Why is it a horrible issue? A difficult one for some, perhaps.
A bad death can be a horrible thing.
I was in hospital once, an emergency admission with penicillin resistant pneumonia.
In the next bay a man was dying. He just kept quietly whimpering "Help me, help me, help me" but they had given him all the pain relief that regulations allowed. He didn't stop all the time I was there. I don't know how long he took to die, but I do know there was nothing else the doctors were allowed to do, because I asked on his behalf.
That is about the last way I want to go.
I wouldn't treat a dog like that, (I'd be punished if I did).

When it is possible to remove the majority of pain from the issue of death a natural death should be allowed and today it is more than likely able to do this. There should be no Euthanasia. Think about the person who does not want to die but, they feel UNDER PRESSURE to end their life because they are no longer useful or their care would be too costly. Before you know it we will be having people being killed by their relatives just because it is convenient. Ohh, I forgot, Terri Schiavo --- well, we already have that now don't we?

Those whose lives are diminished or weakened deserve special respect. Sick or handicapped persons should be helped to lead lives as normal as possible.
2277
Whatever its motives and means, direct euthanasia consists in putting an end to the lives of handicapped, sick, or dying persons. It is morally unacceptable.
Thus an act or omission which, of itself or by intention, causes death in order to eliminate suffering constitutes a murder gravely contrary to the dignity of the human person and to the respect due to the living God, his Creator. The error of judgment into which one can fall in good faith does not change the nature of this murderous act, which must always be forbidden and excluded.
2278
Discontinuing medical procedures that are burdensome, dangerous, extraordinary, or disproportionate to the expected outcome can be legitimate; it is the refusal of "over-zealous" treatment. Here one does not will to cause death; one's inability to impede it is merely accepted. The decisions should be made by the patient if he is competent and able or, if not, by those legally entitled to act for the patient, whose reasonable will and legitimate interests must always be respected.
2279
Even if death is thought imminent, the ordinary care owed to a sick person cannot be legitimately interrupted. The use of painkillers to alleviate the sufferings of the dying, even at the risk of shortening their days, can be morally in conformity with human dignity if death is not willed as either an end or a means, but only foreseen and tolerated as inevitable. Palliative care is a special form of disinterested charity. As such it should be encouraged.
Grace and peace!

The only thing that is horrible about it is the lack of compassion our Govt has for those suffering and dying. Imagine having some terminal disease and suffering in great pain every day. Then, imagine your Govt not caring about what youre going through, and to only care about continually feeding the pockets of pharmaceutical companies in extending your pain and misery...

it is amazing that we think it humane to euthanise suffering animals in pain but we think it ok to prolong the suffering of terminal patients in severe pain. It is very amazing

Soldiers have a long tradition of helping their mortally wounded comrades to suicide. It is a mercy.
