i need a camera, b/c i keep stealing my mom's and then she gets all mad. i have a concert im going to in about 4 weeks, and then then a whole summer ahead. im in 8th grade, going into 9th. can you find me a camera that:
-is fairly cheap...200 is about my limit right now...
-something that can fit in your (butt) pocket preferably
-something that makes good quality pix when posted online
-dont really care what brand
-zoom is important usually.
-i take tons of black and white
-once in a while, i'll use a 'movie recorder' but eventually, ill just get a video camera too...
-i would specially like it if i can go to a store and buy it, like best buy, target, etc.
-most would say its an 'everyday point-and-shoot'

Look at the Canon Powershot SD600. It is a good camera and it's tiny. But... DON'T PUT IN YOUR BACK POCKET!!!! You will have a broken camera before you know it. This camera sells for $220 at a major camera retailer, but you will also find it in the local stores that you mentioned.

Stick with any name brand (Kodak, Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax, Samsung, HP, Sony, et. al.) and it will be a good camera. There are LOTS of really good cameras out there for under $200. Ignore digital zoom numbers. If zoom is important to you, you want a good optical zoom. As a matter of fact, I'd give up a Megapixel of resolution if I could get more optical zoom in exchange. You should have no problem getting a 5MP camera under $200.
One thing, though... NEVER, NEVER, NEVER EVER put the camera in your butt pocket. You're just begging to have it sat on or bumped against a door frame or something and getting broken.

The Fuji F20.
it's got low light capabilities that no other compact camera has. So- perfect for indoor social shots.
It's about $150 right now, plus xD card.
It only has a 3x zoom -so you may be looking for more there.
And- there are smaller cameras. It's small, but not really thin and tiny- so possibly not the best butt pocket camera. But these are the things you sacrifice for better image quality. the shots will look as good if not better than a $400 Canon compact.

Kodak makes great ones for under $200 and their software is so easy to use--they make it super easy to share pictures. You can buy them at Best Buy and you do not need to buy one with more than 6 megapixels so don't let the salesperson bully you into spending more for extra megapixels. The only time you would need 10 megapixels is if you plan to blow the pictures up into poster size. You can actually find a good one for around $100. Here is a guide to buying digital cameras:

I have a 5 megapixel camera from Kodak that I bought at Best Buy and it takes beautiful pictures. I paid about $180 for it and have had it for two years and would go out and purchase the exact same one if something were to happen to this one. It also takes short video clips! Good luck!

If you're really planning to put the camera in your butt pocket, better look for something fairly solid. Cameras are electronic devices with moving parts and break easily. Kodak and Nikon make fairly sturdy models that will stand up reasonably well to being sat on.

I'm just going to throw this in here as an aside, since everyone has answered the main question. I would suggest never shooting in Black & White. If you shoot in color, you can process these easily in the computer to change them to black and white. You can't, however, do it the other way around.
Just a tip.
