A normal sized track is 400 m long. A 400 would be one lap, a 200 would be half of a lap, and a one hundred would be one of the long straight stretches of the track (and it's a fourth of a lap), which is the shortest distance you can run in track.

Single events for track include the :100m, 100m hurdle, 200, 200m hurdles, 300m hurdles, 400m, 800m (2 laps), 1600 (4 laps, equivalent to a mile), and the 3200(8 laps, equivalent to 2 miles).

There are also relays in track which are usually the 4*100m relay (4 people in the relay, each run a 100), the 4*400m relay (each person runs a 400, a lap on the track, commonly known as the mile relay because the total distance of the 4 people = a mile.), the 4*800m relay (each does 2 laps), the 4*1600m relay (i think this is a relay, its not done to often tho), and the distance medley relay, where one person runs a 800, next runs a 400, next runs a 1200, and the next runs a 1600.

For track you should make sure you have good shoes, not the normal shoes you run in. They should be a lighter pair, commonly known as 'flats' or a pair of spikes (if you are running on a rubber track).

Just a correction from the first answer you recieved....the shortest distance you can run in track is the 60m. This event is often found in indoor meets and not outdoors. When you are participating in an indoor track meet, the tracks tend to be a little smaller to accomadate for the indoor space. So a 200m indoor would probably be one lap while a 400 indoor would be 2 laps. Some indoor tracks I have ran one have been smaller where I had to run 2 and 1/2 laps to complete a 400m race. Hope that helps!

most tracks are 400 meters in the inside lane all the way around. the 100 means 100 meters or 1/4 of a lap in most tracks. that makes the 200 half a lap and the 400= one whole lap. good luck

just a heads up, be sure you have the right motivation to keep you going with track. too many people say they are joining track to get in shape but quit soon after because it's "too hard". especially on the first day of tryouts, coaches run you hard in order to weed out all the slackers.

also like the person above me said, buy a new pair of running shoes just for track your legs will thank you for it. don't bother with spikes until you're sure you'll stick with track throughout the season or else you're just wasting money.
