My husband died on July 13 and Christmas was around the corner. People were afraid of mentioning his name until my brother spoke up and remembered how my husband use to decorate the house and play with the kids. We cried, but then we all starting talking about the memories we had and it was so nice, it was like he was still with us. Personally, it really helped me when people still talk about him because I know they haven't forgotten him.

Not so sure about the congratulations, but I know having an ear to listen is always welcome. My husband lost his father while he was in high school, and so did my brother's wife. (weird) Anyway, they share a phone call around father's day just to talk with someone who knows how it feels. I could not imagine how that is as I still have both of my parents. But I try to be sympathetic and listen whenever I am needed.

Absolutely! One of the worst things to happen to a person living through personal trajedy is to have those around him ignore him or leave him or her out of occasions he/she would have been included in normally. He's still living and must go on in this world of ours. Don't leave him out of happy events. These events and being around friends and family are what will help pull him through his emotional turmoil and misery. Love heals, remember that.

I would try to acknowledge the holiday for your friend but maybe not go overboard too much. Don't do more than you normally would or go too crazy or the friend will know you are overcompensating for the loss.
