Sorry, I forgot to put that they're not the pilots' helmets, but the deckhands' helments.

Their called "Cranials"...
The primary colors scheme is based on the color of the "float-coat" (vest) with the Cranial most often matching, but sometimes not. The cranial is NOT painted... the color is molded in. Each Cranial is required to have a certain sized portion of white-reflective tape front and back.
Purple = Fuels
Red = Ordance / Fire
Yellow = Directors / LSO / LSE
Blue = Handlers / Elevator-crew
Green = Maintanence-Catapult-Arrestor gear
Brown = Plane Captain
White = Safety / QA (Quality Assurance)
I've never seen them for sale commercially.

US Navy Aircraft Carriers do NOT have Sonar (active or passive) for the purposes of ASW (Anti-Submarine Warfare)... YES there's a fathometer... but that is merely for bottom detection. They DO however have an ASW Division (OX Div) attached to the Operations Department to service the two ASW Squadrons aboard with the airwing: VS (Sea Control Squadrons) flying the Lockheed S-3B Viking and HS (Helicopter, Anti-Submarine) flying the SH-60F Seahawk. These aircraft use passive and active sonobouys (disposable radio-sonar), and the helos have a dipping sonar. I KNOW we don't have sonar onboard the carrier because during an exercise with South Korea we CHEATED !! We took some sonobouys from the Helo Squadron... dropped them off the fantail , rigged an antennae for our receiver, and recorded the signature and tracked (briefly) the South Korean submarine from the USS Kitty Hawk. The OX Division does the ASW and anti-surface briefings, and ASW intelligence and analysis for those squadrons, as well as maintaining the ships NIXIE (torpedo counter-measures). In these days with no Soviet subs to play with, the OX Division also does alot of work with the Surface Task Group Commander... tracking ships and maintaining surface intel. Yes, that is why we'll always have a CG, DDG, DD, and or FFG with us... the CG and DDG for anti-air, and the DD and FFG for their sonar systems

I was in the"Big John"on the "SnoopyHouse",but sometimes they needed more hands to expand the shifts,so I was there on the Flight decks with a helmet painted in red,because that means Fire brigade(just in case of,you know what can happen in Airports...?).We didn't know what we were supposed to do or everybody else 4 that matter,but the rest of the guys,I would have swear they had helmets matching the colors of their favorite football team or Burger Joint.High schools?state? maybe.
Only the pilots were white,but because flying made them feel a little strange(or they dont have bed pans up there)when they came down they were suspictiously brownish.Or pale green,like the president when he was on duty in Vietnam and Iraq.They said he saw yellow too.....or they saw him in yellow?
If you want to use them to ride motorcycle,I wouldn't reccomend them,they wont protect of any impact as they are already broken in pieces,but the Navy keeps them together with a leg bandage inside.And you cant hear nothing with them.If you play football,the real thing would be better than the Naval issue.It is a bad replica.

Robert got your question right. If you want one, contact a US Navy Recruiter (www.navy,com), I'm sure they would love to help you pick which color cranial you would like to wear for the next four years. And the best part is the cranial comes with the job and it's FREE

The helmet colors don't really mean muh. The shirts do
Red shirt = ordinance
Yellow shirt = aircraft guide/direction
purple shirt = fuel
Green shirt = aircraft maintenance (Plane captain for example)
I can't remember the rest of the list.
If they paint thier helmet... they paint it to match the shirt.

It tells what kind of jobs they do. They also wear bright colored vests in different colors too for the same reason. I don't remember what colors mean what though.
