Religion doesn't lead to fanatacism. Insecurity does. An inexplicable hole in your being that needs to be filled does. Lacking a "life" does. Maybe OCD. Maybe mental illness. Maybe I could think of any number of other things that lead to fanatacism, if I wanted to take more time on it. But not religion.
Religion is only a commonly used tool for the fanatic to play out his dramas...

All religion can lead to fanaticism, it would only take one over-zealous believer to victimise people into believing that their path is the right path. That their cause has been handed down by God Himself, and he was the chosen one to lead the believers into deliverance through violence, murder, kidnapping and so on......the list goes on longer and longer but the same result violence and death. These happens because of greed and intolerance for others, because they believe that they are the only legitimate religion and has that imminent right to exist. That's why the struggle for dominance continues, defying the sole message of every religion "LOVE for Others.".

i think the level of fanaticism is dependant on the societal evolution of a specific society/city/town/village.
im sure Sam Harris would disagree.

I'd say a lot of people have little depth of beliefs, even when they claim to belong to a religion. I would say that they are not fanatical at all.
