Find a local dog obedience trainer who has group classes. Explain your situation, and maybe he can help you. Our local guy has doggy daycare and I'm sure he would let you have some one on one lessons there while all the dogs are there, too. Your dog needs socialized.

My dachshund is only 12 weeks now, so I have not experience anything like that yet. But how about putting your dog and the other dog on a leash and sitting on the floor .. get close enough where your dog starts freaking out .. but not close enough to where the dogs can touch and just start talking to the other owner. If you act like nothing is wrong, it may calm her down a little to where she can at least be in the same room as a strange dog/person.
If someone is coming over that your dog does not know, have them bring a treat with them! When you answer the door, be happy and have the person give your dog a treat (if they can get close enough!). Something healthy, as you dont want her to get overweight.
Also, how about taking a dog that she DOES know and a dog that she doesnt. She may see the dog that shes "friends" with acting normal around this other dog. Dogs can often learn from other dogs behavior. My pekingnese is TERRIFIED of other dogs. I have gotten him used to my Dachshund .. so now when I go over to Petsmart and he sees other dogs he doesnt freak out as much because he sees my dachshund wanting to play. So I have found that this works for me, so it might work for you also.
If you try other methods and they don't work, you might want to consult a trainer.
Good luck with your beautiful dachshund! and hope this helped!

I have 2 dachshunds and have had the same problem. I 've found that making them sit and making a noise, or saying no in a firm voice when they go to bark will make them stop. I'm not saying that they responded a first couple of times but slowlyand w/ a whole lot of patience it started to work. Now when we encounter other dogs, humans, animals my dogs look to me to give them some sort of signal that they can bark. This worked for me, and I'm happy to pass it on. not all dachsie are the same.

Our mini dachshund (almost 2) does the same thing. She sounds ferocious but she's actually a chicken. :) It is comforting to me when my husband is out of town to know that at the slightest sound or movement, she will start barking. I do grab her up sometimes when the mailman delivers a package, etc. and gently hold her mouth closed while I say a firm "Chloe, no!" She is getting better about stopping.

Hi,
As a past owner of 4 Dachshunds I would highly recommend the book "Good Dog, Bad Dog".
Here is a link at amazon with info on it.

I've found that each dog is unique, one of ours fixated on the USPS and UPS men, she knew when they were expected and at the appropriate time would go into action. She would throw herself at the windows and doors, barking and growling, in general having a fit until she was satisfied she had run them off. We found out that her behavior was a protective one, she was defending our home! (Also her home.) And she was successful in every attempt as the UPS and USPS men always retreated. She was being rewarded with each passing day! Dog psychology is something you will need to study to understand your problem. Good Luck, hope you can get a copy of the book, it may help.

I have 2 mini doxies and my male is a sweetie but when his territory is invaded he acts completely like a spaz. Like your baby, we tried a choke chain on him and everytime he barked w/out permissionn we yanked on it and told him "no" very firmly. THAT DID NOT WORK! We've since tried about everything so our last resort is to call in our dog trainer and have her work magic. Our female barks but it's like a "come loveme" bark. Good luck and let me know if anything works.

She is just being a good watchdog. It comes natural to her. I'd recommend getting another dog as well so that she can have a friend and maybe will learn that not all other dogs are mean. If you don't want or can't afford another dog, maybe a trainer can help.

Take her to a dog trainer and they will be able to help you, but dachshunds tend to be like that, so it might not help.

she is protecting her territory .
You should be able to teach her NOT to challange things if you are around. If she starts barking you can just tell her NO in a firm voice and pet her to calm her down. She should learn that if you are calm then she can be too.
