...choosing the CORRECT dog=breed= that people will be spending the next *15* years(w/any luck) caring for?

I always associated the word ONLY w/giggly 12-13yo girls. PLEASE don't tell me *they* are allowed the responsibility for such an important decision!

You are right. People choose their new pup based on their cuteness, and never bothered to research the breed. When the cute little pup is grown and no longer "cute", they find themselves in over their heads with dogs who are too active, not active enough, aggressive, medical problems, grooming and maintainence needs, and so on.
A perfect example was several years ago when the new 101 Dalmatians movie came out. Everyone in the country with kids got a Dalmatian, and the shelters and humane society ended up with more Dalmatians than they have ever seen because alot of people just didn't know what to expect when they were grown and no longer those cute adorable little pups.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with wanting a cute dog. I am sure that is not the only requirement that people look for when choosing a dog. People want a cute mate in life. They choose a life partner more for looks than anything and often end up with the worst husband/wife that they could find. They think if they are cute then everything else will be okay. I think choosing a spouse for looks alone is far worse than choosing a dog based on how cute it is.

Unfortunately, "they" ARE often (ir)responsibly allowed to make such important decisions as the choice of another being to care for. And "their" parents "forget" that it is not just another toy that they are buying but a living being that experiences pain, joy, sadness, and so on and needs to have vet bills paid for neutering, shots and health care, good food bought, grooming, a warm, safe place to sleep, cleaned up after--all the rest of the package that comes with the "cute"...which is probably why so many pets are abandoned each year, end up in shelters and euthanized each year.

I know. The breeds that appeal to me most are herding breeds, which require a lot of extra work becuase of their exercise needs, and I am willing to supply that, and my dog is cute! Well, more stunning, actually, becuase of his coloration and hard, muscular, strong body.

I agree with you on this "cute" thing. I like to call this syndrome "PUPPY LALA LAND". They choose a breed by .."aww its so cute" then the great dane grows up and uh oh! It ate the couch!
Then it's in a shelter.

No they probably are not. But they do have access to the computer and the internet more than the parents do.
