Hi,

I own a beautiful and healthy German Shepherd female dog of 2 yrs, and looking forward to her first breeding.

If you know a suitable pure male German Shepherd dog which is interested in mating then please let me know.

Other relevent info is highly welcome.

Thanks in advance.

The best way to start is by talking to the people that you show or compete her with. If you aren't doing either (meaning AKC confirmation or working shows or Shutzhund training), she needs to be spayed. Having an AKC German Shepherd is not valid enough reason to breed her. Breeding is ONLY done to improve the breed and to get as close to standard as possible.

GSDs are incredibly prone to hip and joint problems. Has she been cleared by a vet and by penn-hip and/or OFA? If not, or if she didn't pass, she needs to be spayed.

Were at least ONE of her DIRECT PARENTS champions or high ranking working dogs? If not, she probably needs to be spayed.

Has she been evaluated by a GSD judge or standard expert (not just you or a random breeder) to come very close to the standard? If not, she probably needs to be spayed.

Do you know the health and temperament of at least 4-5 generations in her line? Including their other litters? If not, she probably needs to be spayed.

Are you a member of the breed parent club? Have you been working competitively with GSDs for 5+ years, including mentoring with breeders? If not, you probably aren't an experienced breeder and she should be spayed.

Where did she come from? If it was a pet shop, then spay her right now. If it was a backyard breeder or puppy mill, then spay her right now. Generally, breeding quality dogs come from experienced breeders who compete or show their dogs (and win). They sell two types of dogs - pet quality and show quality. Good breeders usually don't sell show/breeding quality animals to non-show people or inexperienced breeders. If her breeder did not show (and win) and did not differentiate between her puppies, then she probably isn't breeding quality. As wonderful of a pet as she might be, that's still mot an ethical reason to breed her. See http://www.geocities.com/bluegracepwd/wheretobuy.html for more information on what a good breeder is

What attributes are you looking for in a stud? If it's just that he's AKC, then she should be spayed. A stud dog needs to compliment a female's conformation and temperament to try and create perfect puppies. If you don't know how your dog is flawed (and they ALL are), then you won't be able to select an appropriate mate for her. And, if you aren't concerned about vet testing, then chances are VERY high you will get a low quality stud with Hip Dysplasia issues. This creates low quality, injured puppies.

I recommend taking some time on the GSD website. http://www.gsdca.org/Main.htm
GSDCA code of ethics: http://www.gsdca.org/Noframes/breeders_code.html

the AKC resonsible breeding website: http://www.akc.org/breeders/resp_breeding/index.cfm

And the Golden Retriever site. I know that Goldens are a different breed, but their breeding page is fabulous. And goldies also suffer from hip and joint problems, so much of the advice there is applicable to GSDs as well. http://www.grca.org/acquiring.htm#breeding

And, a general breeding website: http://dogplay.com/Breeding/index.html

NONE of these sites are anti-breeding websites. They are FOR responsible and ethical breeding and educating people on how to be a good breeder (the opposite of China, below).

Good luck to you.

I totally agree with the first respondent. I breed and show German Shepherds with two champions I personally bred an have and a long line of champions and grand victors in my line. All of the factors she listed is what responsible breeders do every time we consider having a litter. I personally only breed if I'm looking for the next great champion in my line. With that said I also research many pedigrees to find the absolute best male or best female to breed to. Breeding is allot of work and we do not get rich from puppy sales. One other thing to consider is the offspring, you have to be prepared to take pups back if they donot work out with the new owners and also be prepared to refund any money paid to you. And you also need to guarantee the health of your pups.

Really it is up to you to find a healthy stud for your female. Choose him ahead of time, Let the stud dog owner know when you expect your dog to come in season. they should let you know about any requirements they have. You should chose a backup as well, just in case the first choice isn't available. Have our female examines by a vet to ensure she is healthy. Have a brucellosis test done as well. Make sure the stud has a clear bill of health from the vet as well. Make sure he is AKC register. Make sure you pick out a stud that complements your female. Don't rush into things.. Talk to breeders and read books on this and how to take care of puppies. Be prepared to handle things if things should go wrong. Good luck to you and please do your homework for the safety for your dog.

Please don't take offense when i say this because I'm not totally against breeding.
However, considering the EXTREME problem with pet-overpopulation, and the huge amount of time and money it takes to breed dogs (if done correctly) ; are you sure it's a good idea to do this? Also, having your dog fixed significantly reduces the risk of cancer.
