I teach 7th and 8th grade general music classes. It is a required class, not an elective, so everyone has to take it. I'd like to better motivate my students, so let's hear it from YOU! What would you want your music teacher to know so music class would be one of your favorite subjects? Thanks!!

Try to not give a lot of written work or homework. Also, don't try to make kids understand names and dates, just be sure they understand concepts of the time period.

Games and projects are always fun, especially when you get to work with your friends. My class always enjoyed reading and playing music on simple xylophones and such. This also gave the kids in band a chance to show off their instruments.

Well I don't fit into this age demographic and I am 15 in grade 10 and music is an elective for me. And I would tell Ms. Fowler to keep up the awesome work! She's enthusiastic teach music, she picks fun songs that are awesome and amazing to play and I love going to band. I'm a band nerd, I know.

I have a really cool middle school music teacher. One day he asked us what we would like to do for the rest of the month. I suggested a spin-off of American Idol. We auditioned in groups or singles and had different levels. The winner will get to sing in front of the whole school. I think it's a good idea but people shouldn't be forced to join. (Some people hate being in the spotlight!)

I am a student, from my point of view you should let them know about the music nowadays, how they are and their history.you could relate music these day to the olden days like calssical.....like how funny it would be to have rock, hiphop and such music in the classical times!my teacher does that and made the students have an interest in music(she taeches all level).Since 8th and 9th grader are more mature ,you should add a zest to your music lessons.Try not to be boring or too lively when you talk and all that ,it will make the student lose interest in you or think you are a weirdo.

Well first of all. Don't ever make them sing in front of the class! My teacher made me do that and everyone hated it and was so embarassed. Everyone elses suggestions is what i was going to say. My teacher was really funny and animated.

i never took general music because i am in concert band but if i were one of your students i would want you to know that most of the kids dont want to be there in the first place because if your school is anything like mine they dont want to. they all think it is boring. (i think differently). if you were my teacher i would also want you to know a bit about "us" (the students) it is probably going to be hard to teach when you know nothing about your students. i hope i helped.

I would say "teacher, if you can't play Bach's Fantasia in Cm, then get out of my face."
