Well in my state (California) you get fined if a cop sees you not wearing your seat belt, so I always try to remember to wear it. (So much for a "free" country that we live in (U.S.A.) :\)
I don't know why they don't put the kind of seat belts that are attached to the door on all cars, then it would be easier to be disciplined about it.. Most of the times I do wear seat belt regardless of the length of the journey, but sometimes I forget

And ususally when I get in my car I have to drive a long distance since the neighborhood I live in is built on the assumption that a person has a car to get places

Fortunately, I am old enough to remember when you could drive over 100mph in the UK without getting a ticket!
But in those days our general attitude to Government directives was a lot different to what it is today.
When the Government said (sometime in the late 60's I think) we should "clunk, click, every trip. Seat belts became the latest "must have" accessory for anyone even slightly interested in motoring.
I was also very much into motor sport and rallied, raced, hill climbed and sprinted every weekend.
In short, seatbelts became such an integral part of my everyday motoring I actually feel very insecure if I forget to fasten my seatbelt, no matter how short the journey. It is simply a reflex action to fasten it now.

Doesn't matter how far the journey, you could have an accident just pulling out of your road! I always wear my seat belt, and will encourage my children to do so.

well yes, your chances of getting in an accident in residential area is much greater than on the highway. Even on Sunday. I didn't wear one, when I got into a headon on a nice day Sunday afternoon on dry roads, light traffic. That is all I remember....decent day, light traffic. 2 weeks later I woke up. Hit by a drunk at 60 mph( me in a VW van). I went thru the windshield with my head. That was many years ago...still suffering after-effects. Seatbelt would have saved me there. So I am a believer.

My life was saved by a seat belt years back, and I cannot imagine driving without belting up. It has become a part of me, similar to wiping after using the toilet.

I've stopped wearing one on my journey down the stairs, enough is enough. However, when in a car, it feels uncomfortable now not to wear one. Given the type of car I drive, I'd prefer a full harness strap but then that might suggest I go too fast. I do, however, drive in Germany a lot where fast is very fast. And no, speed doesn't kill. The misuse of speed kills.

You betcha! I've been in two serious (fatal) accidents in my lifetime, both within 2 miles of my home. The seatbelts saved my life both times. Both times the other driver was not belted in and did not survive.

I'd sooner walk down Main Street in my birthday suit than drive a block without a seatbelt.

I do. If I even try to backout of my parking spot or something without it on I feel all stressed out lol. It nags at me. I have to have it on. I rode a school bus once and I went crazy, it felt so wierd to have no seatbelt.
So yes, I can't concentrate if I don't have it on...I've tried. I've tried to make it down the street or a few blocks away before and I just can't do it!
So what about you hmmmm?

hehe "Click it or Ticket" is the saying around here.
