The best steakhouse is in Brooklyn - Peter Luger's. In Manhattan, Mark Joseph is excellent. Craftsteak is good. I like Keen's too.

Everyone always says Peter Lugar's, but there are other's that are just as good and are in Manhattan. I think Smith and Willensky is fantastic. The Old Homestead has been there forever. Everyone seems to forget about the Palm, but it does have the problem of no reservations, but worth the wait. Many people love Sparks. So, I would say there is no such thing as the BEST steakhouse in NYc. We just have too many great one. Oh yes, can't forget the 21 Club.

In Manhattan, I think Sparks is the best steakhouse, with Morton's a close second. Peter Luger's is ranked the best in NYC, but it's in Brooklyn and I didn't think it was worth the taxi ride.

The best one in Manhattan is Ben Benson's. Forget the chain places (including Ruth's Chris) and go to Ben's.
Sparks would be my number 2. Gallagher's was a great place 25 years ago, but if you don't have a time machine, forget it...
Peter Luger's is still the best in NYC, but it's in Brooklyn.

Speed, Suspense and Steak Frites - Cercle Rouge in Manhattan but the owner, G. Forgeois, owns 4 other places - each distinct - throughout the city.

I've been to a lot of steakhouses, best overall steak restaurant dining experience has to be Dylan Prime.

Peter Luger's consistently ranks #1 on
Zagat's NYC Restraurant guilde (the bible of fine diners).
They carry the highest quality steak, although their location (Brooklyn),atmosphere, clientele (stuffy ol' businessmen) and service leaves a lot to be desired.
After that, there's
2) Sparks
3) Strip House
4) Wolfgang's Steak
5) BLT Steak (my favorite)
6) Ruth Chris

This is really a matter of personal taste -- the top ones all have a good steak. I prefer Keen's for the service and unique atmosphere.
