I don't think it's part of a religious ceremony - more of a tradition at the party after the wedding ceremonies (that I know of). I believe the Greeks do it as well as the Jewish people. There may be others.

I remember seeing that in the musical "Fiddler on the Roof" and they were Jewish so it must be a traditional Jewish wedding thing??
