I recently moved to Spain and something here is making my stomach very gassy and painful. This is the only symptom I am experiencing. I have been sticking to low-fat, low-carb diet for over three years now so wheat products and broccoli haven't bothered me before. I don't eat beans. I am not lactose intolerant(unless that develops later in life). By trial and error I am leaning towards some type of common sweetener used in the foods here. Back home(usa)I use Splenda, they don't have that here so I use sugar. I am suspicious of foods bought in the supermarket that include sweeteners. I don't usually eat out here, my problems occur when I cook a meal at home. Any clues?

Maybe it's a result of the cooking time you give to vegetables. A Chinese friend told me that in places with high altitude such as Denver it is impossible to cook Chinese food properly as the heat intensity of the fire is affected by the scarceness of oxygen. Try to cook them a little longer and see what happens. Also, if you use olive oil switch to other vegetable oil or viceversa. Your enzymes are resenting the change.

What kind of cooking oil are you using at home? Most of europe is fine cooking with oil rendered from animal fat, but we primarily use vegetable oil here. I've heard of people having those same types of problems from animal oil...
