Smokey Yunick was a pilot in WW II.He flew a B17 Flying Fortress.He was with the Army Air Corps.97th bombardment group.
Several sites mention thet he flew for the flying tigers but no dates given.

Smokey passed away in 2001 before his birthday. He was working with Tim Flock, Herb Thomas, Ralph Moody, Paul Goldsmith, Cotton Owens, Marvin Panch, Fireball Roberts, Buck Baker, A.J. Foyt, Bobby Isaac, Banjo Matthews, Johnny Rutherford, Bobby Allison, Mario Andretti, Curtis Turner, Charlie Glotzbach and more.

Here's a tidbit about his racing background. He owned the "Best dam garage in Daytona", he was part of the Alabama Gang, which consisted of Neil Bonnet, and Bobby and Donny Allison. Also he was the crew cheif that cheated in just about every race, and NEVER did get caught. He was also portrayed in Days of Thunder. I couldn't tell you about his years in the service, but my guess is he did what all the soldiers did..........killed the enemy.
