We're not.

2007-03-23 11:25:58 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

Strictly speaking - we're not. We are trying to
bring peace to a country that is tearing itself apart
due to religious sects and insurgents trying to
destroy one another.

At least theoretically, we're trying to maintain the peace.

That does NOT explain how we got there, mind you.
Why did we invade Iraq? The Congress voted to do
so on the assurances of the President that Iraq had
weapons of mass destruction.

Since then, we haven't found any WMDs.

So why did President Bush lie and tell us that he
knew that they were there?

Well, it may be that he was trying to stabilize the
government from the big oil companies' point of view
(he has worked in big oil, he has friends in Saudi
Arabia, etc).

It may be that he wanted to finish "Daddy's war".
That is the elder Bush decided NOT to eliminate
Sadam Hussein since we had no stable government
to replace it with. However, many people deride
the elder Bush for not finishing the job. Personally,
I think NOT sacking Baghdad was probably the best
thing the elder Bush ever did.

However, it is most likely because the Secretary
of Defense he came in with (Rumsfeld) was hell
bent on going to war with Iraq and was looking around
for an excuse to do so. It is still unclear how they
turned 9/11 into that.

In any case, the decision to invade Iraq is certainly
the worst US foreign policy decision made this
millenia - and perhaps the last.

Shortly after 9/11 our country was committed to combating terrorism and was fully behind a president that said we would root out terrorists where ever they were and we would confront foreign states that harbored or supported terrorists. 4 months later at the State of the Union Address President Bush called Iraq, Iran and North Korea the axis of evil. Each of these countries either harbored terrorists and/or supplied them with weapons. It should have been clear that at that time a conflict was coming. We successfully created a regime change in Afganistan although we we unable to capture Osama Bin Landen. Faulty intelligence got us into Iraq on the belief that of the axis of evil powers Iraq was the greatest threat to produce and sell weapons of mass destruction to terrrorists. Saddam sponsored terrorism by providing death benefits to suicide bombers. He had shown the capability to use chemical weapons on his own nation and it appeared he was still capable of producing such weapons and was pursuing nuclear capability as well. Bottom line is that President Bush was doing exactly what he said he would do on 9/20/2001 -

"I will not forget the wound to our country and those who inflicted it. I will not yield, I will not rest, I will not relent in waging this struggle for freedom and security for the
American people." (sourced)

His commitment to protect this country is why we are in Iraq. Right or wrong in Sept 2001 we supported and loved the man for this commitment. Today because many Americans do not have the resolve necessary see this thing through and are unwilling to accept that a faction of radical Islam will stop at nothing to disrupt our freedom, the president is reviled by many. When a politician makes a pledge to perform something typically we laugh it off knowing inside that it probably will not get done. President Bush IS follwoing through with his committment to the American people and that is how we got into Iraq. I do not hope for further conflict but I remember his speech we have only dealt with one of three prongs of the axis. North Korea has Nuclear weapons now and Iran is pursing nuclear technoligy also. Iran's president has said that he hopes for the destruction of Isreal and the Jews. The last time a national leader called for this a little conflict called World War II was in the news. So, without a crystal ball I would say that the United States isn't done with its war on terror. Regardless of who is in the white house next the reality of world events will continue to push us into conflict as long as there are groups of people out ther bent on our destruction.

Only because George W. Bush wanted to invade Iraq which his daddy did not do in 1991. More pointedly, Dubya wanted to impose democracy in Iraq and if successful he will be known as the George Washington of future Iraq.

Yeah, well it's a long story but bottom line is:

The future of this country (if we keep with the mindset we have and government we have) is dependent on Middle East oil. If China beats us to the last oil reserves then we can kiss our security goodbye. We need Iraq as allies to our demand for oil because of the way we run things with our oil dependency.

Now, if the people of our country demand we return our focus back to innovation and development of alternative methods to fuel or machines and produce our goods, then we wouldn't have to deal with the Middle East anymore. Other nations could fight each other for it.

*sigh*

Congress has never declared war against Iraq.

The US is in the midst of a civil war in a country that has historically, never resolved its issues but rather, agreed to a tenous peace, enforced by a henchman, supported by the US.

A state of war makes it easier for the neo-con corporate slim that own our Federal Government to steal money and further slant laws to favor the weathy. Iraq was availble after 9/11 and had oil, always a worthy target, so they pulled the Bushwacker's strings and off we went.
