As you are all aware, there are many different beliefs among Satanists, but I would like to know how many people are LaVeyan, i.e. "self worshipers" and how many are actual Devil worshipers who believe that Satan/Set/Lucifer etc is an actual God? I'm doing some reserch on the subject and was wondering what the ratio was like. Also, if you call yourself Satanist, but have beliefs other than that I have mentioned, I'm interested in those too!

I'm neither a LaVeyan nor am I a Luciferian, Setian, or a devil worshipper. I'm what you would call a "Traditional Satanist"- someone who believes they, themselves, are god, but without the LaVeyan rituals and rites.

Frankly, I think LaVeyan Satanism is a good religion, but I don't think that the rituals contained within its dogmas are really relevant. They were only created to piss off the nearby Christian community in San Francisco, where Anton Szandor LaVey established the religious sect. I believe in myself and label myself as "God," but I don't sacrifice anything to myself or give offerings. That's just outdated and silly.

And Satanism isn't a belief in the devil, numbskulls! Satanism started from atheism. It started as a cycle of pious religious fanaticists becoming agnostic, then the agnostics turning atheist. Satanism is just "Power-Atheism," where the Satanist just says, "I flat out deny the existence of God. Hell! If there WAS a god, which there isn't, why not it be ME?!" And that road leads to small-time self-worship. That's all Satanism is. The name of the religion was taken from Satan in the Bible, because "Satan" in Hebrew means: "Adversary," "Questioner," "Accuser," and etc. Lucifer QUESTIONED God's rule and acquired the name of Satan and was cast down from Heaven. Satanists are QUESTIONERS.

I have a friend who is a theistic satanist. She views satan as a real deity, who is viewed as being equally male and female, has many incarnations, and is the "Bestower of Knowledge". The story of the serpent in Genesis is emphasized, because it was in the garden of eden that satan blessed man with the knowledge of good and evil, and it was this knowledge that "gave birth to wisdom". Satan is viewed as a force of good but can be used as a force of evil. Practitioners may relate to the "christian" incarnation of satan, or may worship another god that they believe to be an incarnation of satan -- usually from Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Roman, or Greek mythology.

The group of people which are actually referred to as "devil worshippers" have a much different doctrine -- they view themselves as servants of evil and enemies of good in the name of satan, who is the "god of all that is evil". This is also called diabolatry, and its members are usually the ones involved in animal sacrifice or vadalizing churches. Sometimes, satanic theists refer to them as "reverse christians".

There are more "self-worshipping" LaVeyan satanists than there are theistic satanists, but devil worship is definitely the distinct minority. Sorry I couldn't give you more info.

Most people who actually worship Satan are just pathetic teenagers doing it for the attention. Anyone who says they do is an idiot and shouldn't be allowed an opinion.

That said, attention-seeking mall-Goth Satanists probably outnumber LaVeyan Satanists by a factor of about 10 to 1.

There are only a few that hang out here. They are sporadic at best, although they usually make big waves. I have emailed one of them and we traded a few letters back and forth. I also talked to two others for several hours one night.

All of them were LeVay followers. They were basically atheists that used the name to mock the religious. They had a rather hedonistic philosophy that said they should do what felt good to them. I have yet to hear from one that thought that there really was a Satan that was a god.

Thre's a guy on R&S who has a LaVey avatar. I'm curious to know if you get a real answer. I'm betting LaVey types are a minority because it's a rather sophisticated and Nietzschean teaching.
