What's the difference, if there is any, between shampoos and conditioners which promise to "smooth" hair and those which promise to "straighten" hair?

smooth hair means it wont be frizzy and it will look shiny and sleek. straighten hair means it will help if you are straightening your hair

Straighting shampoo is used to help straighten your hair, while smoothing shampoos are used for straighting and smoothing away frizzes, mostly frizzes though, so if you want to achieve both use a smoothing shampoo and follow up with the same condtioner

In my experience, there's no such thing as a shampoo that can really straighten your hair. The only way to do it is to blow dry it and brush it straight or use an iron. Curly or wavy hair that is wet will revert to its natural state. You can only straighten when it's bone dry... and if you're using shampoo, your hair isn't dry. Don't waste your money.

Smoothing shampoo will help with frizz.

well you answered your own question...one relaxes and straightens your hair-while the other "smooths" it..that means it gets rid of frizz-it probably doesnt straighten it too much.
