Alot depends on what you want it for, where you are going, and the training you have had. Ask other people what they have in their kits, and do a search on the internet. You'll get alot more good ideas.

depends on what you need it for? and how big you kit is?

for outdoors-->include something to remove ticks and splinters, tweezers work well. Neosporin for burns and peroxide is good for cleaning wounds. Make sure you have some clean dressings, sterile if possible to cover anything open (4X4s are fine and cheap). Don't go crazy with band-aids just regular and large is good. If you hike band-aids will also cover your blisters. Keep at least 2 Klings to wrap up dressings. Maybe consider some antibiotic cream, you can buy individual packs which are cheap. Also buy a triangular dressing they usually come with 2 safety bins for a broken bone to be wrapped. 1 last thing alcohol pads are small and inexpensive and pretty good for keep a wound clean.

If you have a large kit, include other equipment like pen lights, blanket, maybe some aloe. If you think you might be in a position to do CPR add a CPR mouth shield. It also can't hurt having a first-aid manual if you have the room, you can pick them up for free just about anywhere. Lastly, if you have a prescription for any meds from a doctor keep a few pills to get you by a couple of days in case of an emergency.

Tell ya what I would put. A box of good, tough band-aids,different sizes. Several rolls of not gauze but a better wrap called Kling (stronger, a Paramedic's favorite wound wrap). Some gauze pads and some Sterile gauze pads, different sizes. A Pocket Mask for "rescue Breathing". A sling with a saftey pin. Asprin, Sunscreen and Bactracin ointment if you like. Your job with a First Aid kit is to tend to the ABC'S like any good EMT. A=Airway, position with your hands, use your pocket mask for B=breathing. With your good bandages you can assist control of bleeding, C=Circulation.
