I read that you just poke a hole in one oil capsule and squirt the oil into the child's food (once a day) and this is supposed to be beneficial for his brain for at least the first two years of life.

I already asked my pediatrician, and she had no knowledge of what "Neuromins" are (made from sea algae as opposed to fish oil, which can be contaminated with mercury). Therefore, she said she wouldn't recommend them. Has anyone else heard about this?

I guess it would depend on where you read this, but I'd put a lot more faith into what my pediatrician had to say. How would you feel a year from now if you discovered your experiment made him really sick?

I asked a registered dietitian about omega 3 supplements, and was told that no supplements are necessary or recommended for children, that all nutrition should come directly from their diet. She said there has been no proof that oils in supplement form have any beneficial effects at all. For my own children, I just couldn't imagine using them as guinea pigs. The people who sell 'herbal' remedies and supplements are not regulated the way the rest of the food and drug industry is, and unfortunately not everyone who is trying to sell you something is going to tell you the truth.

If you want to help increase his brain power, read to him, play games with him, do puzzles with him, colour with him, and keep the t.v. and movie watching to an absolute minimum. Feed him a good, healthy, balanced diet and make sure he gets lots of sleep.

my 2 1/2 yr. old has been diagnosed as bipolar. the first thing her pediatrician told me to do is give her 1/4 tsp. of DHA. she weighs about 30 lbs. you can find it at most health foods stores and i have found the brand Nordic Naturals (100% cod oil, which is safe) to be the easiest to be taken. it has a hint of strawberry. i give it to her in the morning. i do know if you give a child too much, it will make them hyper. i cant begin to tell you how her attitude has changed and how many new words she is saying, not to mention her strategy and cognitive thinking has improved. im currently 6 1/2 mths. pregnant and take fish oil twice a day to get an early start on my soon-to-be (yes, my ob says its fine).

Classical music, parent interactions, reading, free play and all are beneficial for his brain development.

Please do this the old fashion way - i have smart children because I put a lot of effort to teach them well.
