In 1852, Francis Wolle patented in the U.S., and later in France and England, a machine that he devised for making paper bags. It was the first of its kind, and covers the fundamental principle of the many similar machinges that are now used.

Francis Wolle was born December 17, 1817 in Jacobsburg, Pennsylvania and died in 1893.

The Square-bottom paper bag was invented by Margaret Knight in 1871 and the square-bottomed bag with pleated sides that we all know today was invented by Chas Stilwell and was patented in 1883.

while pape bags were around, if you look at some old silent movies, they wrapped their packages up in paper tied with string. Maybe that was cheaper than springing for a bag.

They were brown because they were first made from the linen wrapping of mummies which were cheap. People even ate parts of the mummies as medicine. Strange but true??
