Dejar (present progresive) = I am leaving
Deje (past) = I left

Deje a mis hijos en casa de mi madre.
I left my kids at my mother's house.

dejé = i left, i stopped, i quited, etc

As it often happens, it depends n the context:

Dejé de fumar: I stopped/quit/gave up smoking
Dejé el auto en el estacionamiento: I left my car in the parking lot
Dejé a mi novio: I broke up with my boyfriend
Dejé salir a mi perro: I let my dog out
Dejé la visita para otro día: I put the visit off for another day

dejé = (I) left

I left my keys = Dejé mis llaves.
