You're comparing apples to oranges. Metro PCS is a cell phone service and Vonage is a VoIP (digital home phone) service. Metro PCS is going to be more expensive because you can use it anywhere in their coverage area. Vonage requires access to a high speed internet connection in order to use. You can take it with you, but this usually means a hotel room with high speed internet access or a friend's house. Vonage is usually much more inconvenient to take with out as well although portable cell phone like devices as well as ones that double as cell phones when outside of wifi range are becoming more commonplace. Vonage has free long distance to not only the US but Canada and much of Western Europe as well where Metro PCS you can just call the US. For a cell phone carrier, Metro PCS has pretty poor coverage. Their strong point is the unlimited minutes, not their coverage. With Metro PCS you have to pay for equipment. Vonage has free equipment available unless you want a deluxe Vonage device. Which is better? It's up to you. Personally I have both a cell and VoIP service because with the places I travel, our version of MetroPCS just doesn't cut it coverage wise. I don't think they even provide a sufficient signal at my house. I like being able to use my existing cordless phone system with my VoIP service as well so others can pick up an extension and get on the phone at the same time. Also, the sound quality on VoIP exceeds that of digital cell phones. Between Sunrocket and my Cingular rate plan, I pay less than just having MetroPCS by itself.
