There are many scores out there. What most people mean by 'credit score' is FICO score. FICO is a product of Fair Isaac, Co. If you want your FICO score, buy it from http://www.myfico.com (use "CPPSAVINGS" promo code to get 20% off).

If you just need to see your credit history (or, credit report), then you have the right to request one a year from every Credit Reporting Agency. For copies from the big 3 CRAs, go to http://annualcreditreport.com and get them there.

Checking your own score will not lower it. Read more about it from the people that make FICO scores, Fair Isaac, Co.: http://www.myfico.com/CreditEducation/CreditInquiries.aspx#20

p.s. freecreditreport.com isn't really free. You have to enroll in Triple Advantage; if you don't remember to cancel, you have to pay for it. And obviously, enough people do that because they are still in business. A good rule in life is that if something requires a credit card, it's not free.

Contact Experian or TransUnion (there is one more but I forget the name.) They are the three credit reporting agencies. They must issue you a credit report for free.

You can also apply for a loan and find out that way.

The US government provides the only free report that I know of right here:

I wouldn't say that everything else is a scam, because you will get a report -- but the one above is the only free one I know of!

Good luck!
