I know the calories in beer are just horrendous, but what's the word on a dry red wine or chardonnay?

The problem isn't even so much the calorie count, but the fact that all alcohol is "empty" calories. It's kinda like drinking lots of cans of soda...it replaces the "good" stuff you would normally put in. So every time you have an alcoholic drink think of it as downing a can of pop, make it a "special" occasion thing...

Having one to two glasses of wine isn't going to hurt, actually it is good for you. Same with one or two beers. Where people run into problems is when they over indulge in anything. Eat proper portion sizes healthy food groups and excersise, have a glass of wine and you should have no problem losing weight. If you are truely concerned about calories only (which you shouldn't be you should consider nutrition) then clear alcohols just as Vodka have the fewest calories.

As Homer Simpson would say " Here's to alcohol, the cause of and solution to all life's problems" cheers !!!
But can u imagine a first date, an anniversary, a wedding reception, a birthday celebration or a lonely night with it? But yea alcohol is a major source of calories so it is detrimental to weight loss.

yes and no.

wine is certainly better for you calorie wise than beer, AND drinking in moderation 1-2 glasses a day actually has health benefits.

however as your body tends not to digest and process food when it is trying to rid itself of extra alcohol (if you are drunk lets say) the extra food gets stored as fat until the alcohol is out of your system.

it is better for weight loss if you don't drink, but one glass a day or a few times a week won't kill your weight loss plan. binging will- a lot of alcohol at once will kill your weight loss plan.
