I have a painting that was done by Giovanni Bellini (Bellinus). It is a Modonna and Child painting. It is an oil painting on canvas (i think a replica, that it might be a print?) It has texture...I dont know how to tell or go about telling what it is exactly...looks very old, but is in excellant condition. Cant afford to have it appraised, so just need ball park figure for selling it on ebay!

Determining who created the work is a profoundly difficult process. If you are looking to research as much as possible before getting it appraised, there are a number of websites containing Bellini's known body of work. If this painting is on the website, you don't have the original. Honestly, to find an original this old, and from an artist so prominent, is nearly impossible.

Even if you don't have the real thing, the value of the print (the term for a piece of artwork that has been repainted) depends greatly on who/when/where the print was created. That sort of information requires a paid appraisal, which will likely be necessary before you can expect any real return on your investment.

What you have is likely a print, the value of which can range from the amount you paid for it (20 bucks?) to several thousand dollars.

Are there cracks in the paint? Are there any areas where the paint has chipped off? How old does the canvas look? How was it attached to the stretcher? Look at the nail heads...if there are staples, likely it is worth at least $5. No way someone online can tell you the value without having first-hand look at it. If you know of any painters...they might be able to at least say they don't know...or, no way is that an original. If its old in perfect shape, I would question its authenticity. On Ebay? Better to go to a second hand or antique store. THere are tens of thousands of pieces of artwork on sale that Ebayers already ignore.

It's probably a reproduction unless the it has an inscription on the lower center
"IOANNES BELLINVS"
ownership history.

If you can't have it appraised you will not find the value. Contact Christies or any local auction house and they might help you out.
