8v usually just need a timing belt, made of some rubbery/cloth band with teeth on the inner face.

16v have a timing belt(as above) and a chain which links both camshafts.

So the rubbery cambelt drives the first camshaft at one end and at the other there is a chain connected to the second camshaft.
