Long coats can not be shown in AKC conformation. You need to find a good breeder that breeds for conformation. I have a show puppy right now that is going to another breeder on co-own. He is going to show her.

I take it you are in the UK? Yes, you can show a long coat, the KC does not have any disqualifiying clauses, but you will not win top awards with it. The breed standard says "Outer coat consisting of straight, hard, close-lying hair as dense as possible; thick undercoat. Hair on head, ears, front of legs, paws and toes short; on back, longer and thicker; in some males forming slight ruff. Hair longer on back of legs as far down as pasterns and stifles and forming fairly thick trousers on hindquarters. No hard and fast rule for length of hair; " but long coats rarely have a hard, close lying top coat. A long coat is not considered waterproof enough for a shepherding dog.
There is a society for White & long coated shepherds & I think they run their own shows.

If it is a registered GSD with the AKC then it can shown in conformation shows as long it's not spayed or nuetered. Whether it meets the breed standards is up to the judge.

Most countries do not accept long haired GSDs. Also the colour's pretty important. For example you can't show a cream or a white. Well in the pedigree bits. Obviously you can still do doggy dancing, flyball, agility or obedience.

Usually, which too long for me. I believe it depends on the guy and also his face though. Certain guys can easily pull off long hair and other folks can't.

Check the local Humane Society, GSD rescues and other similar organizations. Yo will not find a legitimate breeder that will give you a discount puppy. If you find one that will, then there is something wrong with the dog.

Are you in the UK?
Both the long haired and short haired can be showen, but they need to have been bred to the show standards, contact the KC to find out about the show standers.

I have pretty lengthy hair, I like them but I think I would have them reduce short in about some two years

I've heard the AKC may be changing that rule to allow long-hair GSD's. Not sure when that would happen though.
