It will be covering an oil based stain and will receive much use so it needs to be able to hold up. I have some polycrylic, but I'm thinking polyurethane might be better. Or is there something else out there?

Polyurethane would be hard to beat. The poly acrylic will be easier to apply however and if you ever need to you could re-coat easily. Both will go over an oil based stain. Be sure the wood is very clean before you stain it. Wipe it down with lacquer thinner just befor you stain to get any hand oil off.

I'd stick with the polyurethane, put 3 light coats on and sand and use a tack cloth in between coats and that thing will shine and last forever. A spar urethane is used for outdoors and nothing else will hold up to the sun. Acrylics are good if you've got to put down a couple coats in one day but this sounds like its your home so take your time and use the oil you won't regret it. Good luck Les the painter

I used clear high gloss polyurathene on my hot-tub deck handrails and it turned out excellent. I used 4 light coats to build up a nice thick glass-smooth finish.

I've used varnish before, but I don't like the yellowing effect.

That reminds me -- it's time to re-do the parts of the handrails that face the sun (after several years of use).

Whatever you use, I would AVOID a high-gloss finish! This could lead to people's hand slipping (esp. kids w/wet hands) and nasty falls! Go with a satin finish.

Yes, spar varnish.
A marine product that is hard and durable.
