If you have it right now try chewing a bunch of Tums till it seems better. That is what I used to do in that immediate situation.

In the long run you can do better. Over the next several days start taking Prilosec OTC. You take it every day or every other day and in about four days it has cut back on your stomach's acid production. As long as you stick with it you will not have any further heartburn. That is what I did to get persistent relief. I haven't had heartburn for a year or two, ever since my doctor got me onto Prilosec.

I take zantac, my doctor suggested it. On top of that I chew 2 extra strength tums right before bed every night, even if I don't "feel the burn" right then, since sometimes it doesn't start till I lay down. Some days its so bad that none of that works either. Milk used to help before I got pregnant and right at the beginning, but now I might as well be drinking water for all the good it does. Changing your eating habits can help too, less grease, less tomato products, less spices. Bland food like bread, rice (no salt), crackers, etc. I had heartburn with my first pregnancy and it took it a year and a half to fully go away, and its just been excruciating with this pregnancy. Good luck and I hope it gets better!

I wonder if she has a Hiatal hernia, my mom does and she gets heartburn all the time. She also burbs, well let's be honest, she belches loudly and with force, she often gets irritable bowel type symptoms after eating spicy, hard to digest foods, or foods with gravy. A couple things to try, elevate the head of your bed, you can do this by placing a cinder block(2) under the box spring to raise the bed six inches, if you want a lesser slope(so she doesn't have to pick her underwear out of her butt LOL) they sell foam pieces shaped in a wedge form. You place it under your head and upper body, using gravity to keep the acids/digestive juices from backing up and causing heartburn and esphogaus burn/pain. Don't eat meals near bedtime, make sure you are up at least 2-3 hours after eating. Also, eat 6small meals, instead of 3normal size. Make a journal of your daily symptoms, writing down each day, what you ate, your symptoms and to what degree, and how long after eating, that you started feeling symptoms. After 30days or so, you should see a pattern, note the pattern and alter your diet, journal again. When you know why it happens, it makes it easier to understand what to do. Some people have a weak flap in their esophagus, it closes and opens, allowing food to pass, and keep juices down, when the flap is weak, it allows stuff to back up, nothing much you can do, as far as repair. It may not be the hernia, but the weak flap, something you would live with. They often call this condition, Gerds, or acid reflux disease, at any rate, you need relief. I would think chewing Tums on a regular basis would help, if you take other medications on a regular basis, they may be causing your discomfort. I hope you get some relief, good luck.

Of course, the best thing is see a doctor.

After my brain surgery I had to take Zantac with another problem of my stomach.

For me, when I eat tomato sauces or spicy food I have to take a Zantac. If I don't, in the middle of the night I think I am going to die, thinking it is a heart attack. Then I take a Zantac pill, 75 or 150 mgs, eventually it stops.

This may sound off butt since all my pregnancies I have only found this to really work. Drink about 8 ounces of whole milk and eat a piece of plain bread. And do not lay down for at least a hour after eating. These have always helped me and others I have suggested it to! Good luck!

You might want to have her doctors check her gall bladder. I thought I was having really bad heartburn but I was actually having gallstones passing through. If it is actually heartburn a glass of milk should work. If milk doesn't work I would definitely check the gall bladder. If she has a pain on her back or under her ribs on the right side as well as the burning sensation then she is definitely passing a stone. Good luck.

Liquid Gaviscon works great for me. And it works instantly. Is she taking a medication everyday? Like Zantac, Pepcid, Tagamet, Prilosec, etc? If not, she needs to and she can still take the Gaviscon if she has break-through heartburn.

If it persists she needs to see a gastoenterologist and get this checked out. She may have a hiatal hernia causing this and left untreated it can cause esophogeal damage.

I always put like an 1/8th of a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of warm water and chugged it... it helps immediately and the heartburn doesn't come back.

I don't know how healthy that method is though....
