just got a Dell pc, trying to install Windows but the serial number of my machine seems to be missing... wht can i do?

Windows should come preinstalled on the PC, so you shouldn't have to install it yourself.
The documents you received with your computer come with a Windows Certificate of Authenticity - a green half-sheet of paper with the serial number on it. Find that paper and all your problems should be solved.
If they forgot to include it, call the Dell hotline and tell Rajiv in Bangalore that they left it out. They'll send you a new one. Be sure to have your order number handy.

If this is in fact an Official MS copy that you bought from a store of the Window OS then the serial installation code will be with the cd on the box and or case it came in...But, if this is a copy a friend made for you or you downloaded off the internet (pirated) you've got a problem...even if you do find a serial that works to install it you'll have problems validating the copy to activate it or to get updates...
Now if you have the disk but can't find the serial but it is a official copy of Window and it's the disk to reinstall the OS on you computer, then you can use Belarc Advisor to recover the serial for the Windows OS currently install on your computer.
This Serial will work on the disk you have....

If its an OS Windows then the serial/ product key should be on the side of the tower on a colourful sticker...
Without that serial number its illegal, if its a copied version, then get a better one. Otherwise complain to the company you got it from.
If you mean the operating system it should automatically have come with it on the factory settings. If its Office then there are ways and means of getting a new code

Look on the back or side of your computer for a Windows Certificate of Authenticity sticker. The Product Key or Serial as you call it is on that.
It should also be pre-loaded into your recovery itself.

If you bought the windows from a retail store you would want to call microsoft and have them give you the product key for it or if it it's the windows that came with the computer that your trying to activate on your system call dell and they will be able to give you one right over the phone.

You can't. That "serial" as you call it is actually your license key. Without the license you cannot use Microsoft Windows.
The license key is usually on a sticker, or in with the Windows media.
If not, then you can always purchase a new license, or use an alternate FREE operating system:

The only reason you would ask this is you don't have a legal Activation Code. I'll bet you borrowed a friend's disk, just to try it. So... It's illegal to install Vista without BUYING it first! Simple enough for you? And, your friend is a software "Pirate"!

your serial number is on the bottom of your laptop its called a product key made up of 25 digits. if its not there emial me telling me what xp your installing, home or pro and i'll send you a product key that will definatly work for you

If the operating system is Vista, you can install it.
If it is XP/W2000/WMe/Win98, you cant. If you are putting Kubuntu on there, for free, you dont need a bunch of numbers or an activation hassel. Just go to www.kubuntu.org to get it for free.

look on the side or back of pc you will see a sticker on there you will find your serial key on there
