Heather, you need to do more research on rat breeding and rat genetics. Just because a rat looks black, or looks white (phenotype) doesn't mean it will throw black babies or white babies. Pet rats can carry a miriad of genetic material and can throw any color and any marking, when they are bred willy nilly. If you knew about genetics, you could select the proper breeding pair to get the babies that you want.

May I suggest that you join a professional breeder's forum like RatsPacNW http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/RatsPacNW/ where expert breeders can help you through the breeding information that is available to you.

Or join Holistarat http://groups.yahoo.com/group/holistarat where you can talk to a smaller group of hobby breeders.

Firstly, you can't tell what you're going to get if all you know about the genetic backgrounds of the parents is what they look like. Also, what determines skin color in humans is not really comparable to what determines coat color in rats.

You should be able to get some insight into the genetics of your adult rats from the litter(s) you've already produced. I'd take the advice of spazrats and do a little research into rat genetics.

In rats, I believe that the white fur color is the result of a dominant gene. Other colors are caused by recessive genes. If you think about it, when you go to the pet store, what rat color do you see the most often? White, right? I think if you want baby rats that are not white, you might want to try a female of another color.

White is probably the dominant color of your rats, while black is recessive. You will probably only get black rats if you breed 2 black rats of different genders togeather.
Sorry.
