It says in the OT that animals that do not chew the cud are not to be eaten as they are 'unclean'. Pigs don't chew the cud, as they have only one stomach.

Why does this rule exist? Nobody can say for sure. There are plenty of OT rules which don't really make sense. There's even a name for thse odd rules in Hebrew, but I can't remember it.

In primitive ancient times, eating pork was definitely dangerous. The admonition against eating it made sense. In the same way, the requirement of head covers made sense, due to the ease of getting sick or dying without one in the extreme heat of the middle eastern desert.

The problem is not the requirements that were created with religion, but the fact that religions have no ability to recognize that in this different time and place such restrictions may no longer be appropriate. Since religions have no understanding, on purpose, of the original reasoning, their followers have no ability to make changes over time. Therefore, many people consider outdated rules to remain paramount. Funny, huh?

In the Old Testament, certain foods were prohibited and pork was one. The jews dont believe that has ever changed. But, God said the Old law was set to be temporary and was a shawdow of things to come that would be better. and it did change. God set it as temporary to begin with, as He knew that noone could live that kind of a law without it being written on their hearts, and He showed us a better law, a new covenant, way better than the first one. Not included in the new covenant was the list of prohibited foods or what day to go to church, nor the old sacrificial system ot killing animals to be forgiven. Now, its just going to Jesus for forgiveness.
But, many religions dont recognize the new covenant and still follow the old law that has pork as a food not to eat, or shellfish...... we must respect their right to believe as they do, but know that the new covenant is better and live it.

Because some idiots years ago died from eating poorly cooked pork and someone concluded that it was unfit to eat. What a glorious thing that science has shown us the way to eat pork safely.
Hmmmmmm nice juicy stuffed boneless pork chops! Yummy!

Supposedly pork has always had a high rate of being not so grade A...(though modern technology helps with what we eat today) and maybe it just didn't keep well without today's ways of preserving food.

Mankind was warned not to eat swine flesh in the scriptures. It will make you abominable to your Creator.

Check out video and watch why it is unhealthy to eat.

Deu 14:8 And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it [is] unclean unto you: ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcase.

Isa 66:17 They that sanctify themselves, and purify themselves in the gardens behind one [tree] (priest) in the midst, eating swine's flesh, and the abomination, and the mouse, shall be consumed together, saith Yahweh.

Rev 21:27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither [whatsoever] worketh abomination, or [maketh] a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.

In simple terms:
Bible requires animals to chew its cud and split hooves.
Needs both.
A pig doesn't have them both.
Simple.

For a reason WHY, other than the Bible said so, you need to do some in-depth research for reasons - there are many reasons go to the infinite level.

I believe that God gave the Jews this law because at that time, there was no way to safely prepare and eat pork (and other foods) without getting sick. God was looking out for their safety and health. However, even after preparation methods developed, the law stuck.

Neither do the Muslims. It's just considered an unclean food. I would recommend looking at it as a cultural element, rather than a religious thing.
