You didn't say what the lies were about....But, insecure people who feel they don't have enough to offer, tend to tell stories to make themselves seem more worthy of a relationship with you. You could try bolstering their ego occasionally to see if that stops the lies. If they are just an out and out habitual liar, I'd suggest you find another friend.

If it is a guy it might be to keep you at a distance. Guys have to slam on the brakes once or twice in a relationship to catch their breath and see how they feel.
