I guess I could ask "Why do we treat science like a religion?"
It all boils down to your "a priori" assumptions.
Your statement "Don't we realise that science cannot be wrong?" indicates that you have a set of "a priori" beliefs, and are only wanting to belittle those that do not agree with you.
By the way, is science your religion?
Is there a metaphysical component to the universe?
All this is part of the science/religion debate.
