Last week, I bought five white potatoes from the supermarket. I put them in one of those clear plastic bags and tied a knot to close it. For the first couple of days, I kept the bag of potatoes on my kitchen counter. I then moved the bag of potatoes to the floor, which is where they remained for the rest of the week. Today, I noticed that one of the potatoes has completely.. liquified itself, for lack of a better description. There's liquid in the bag, and the skin of the liquified potato is just lying in there limp. The rest of the potatoes look okay, but the ones that were touching the liquid feel sort of soft when I poke them through the bag.. sort of like how poking a wet sponge would feel. What in the world happened to my potatoes?! I don't dare open the bag. Also, if it matters, the potatoes were exposed to light the whole week. They are in a clear bag, about 8 ft away from a window. And my apartment is quite warm (I don't control the temperature, the building does).

oh, you suffocated it, lol. They need to breath! They deteriorate when ethelene gas builds up, and the enzymes start breaking down. You certainly dont want to open that bag, pppeeeeewww. Next time, poke some holes in the bag, and always store them in a cool dark place. I keep mine in a airy bin in a low cabinet.

You need to let potatoes breath. Next time take them out of the bag and store them in an ucovered plastic container or cardboard box, this will eliminated "liquid potatoes". If you open the bag its gonna smell real bad.

They are rotten, throw them away and don't open the bag, the smell will knock you over. Potatoes keep well in the fridge, keep them in your veggie drawer, loose, no bag.
