At the salon it cost me $100 to go blond (I'm a natural redhead) and then $110 to go back to red after I got tired of the blond. The $110 red job was fading back to blond by the second month, so I paid $9.99 for a box of Herbal Essences dye that matched my natural color, and got pretty much the same results. Lasts about a month before the blond shows through. They tell me red fades the fastest though.

If you're going to do an extreme color change from dark to light, I'd have a pro do it. Going darker though, the home stuff seems to work just fine and you'll save a bundle.

Depends a lot on how long you keep the product on while it's dying; also the kind of shampoo you use and how often you shampoo it. A good color should last 4-6 weeks.
Is there a beauty school/training center near you? These people are students but they are supervised by professionals and you can usually get it done for $15 or $20. A chain salon is probably $35-$40 but trendier salons charge upwards of $75 or more.

Most are the same. It will last about 6 weeks. Many salons actually use hairdye that's the same a from the store. My finace's sister used to work at a very pricey salon in Denver and they would get dye from the drugstore when they ran out.

I die my hair at home all the time. I dye mine lighter, so my roots grow out but it doesn't fade- it lasts about 2 months. I have paid up to 150 in the salon. In my opinion, it's not worth it. Use L'Oreal Preference. My stylist said that it is as close to salon hair dye that you can buy.

i would consider getting Revlon or Herbal Essences hair dye. most hair dyes last about a month or month and a half and then ull be able to see your normal color coming...revlon or herbel ess. can be about 8 dollars but its worth it
