Depends on what's causing it, and it seems there's a bunch of things that can... everything from overstriding, to having weak calves, to turning your foot inwards too much, and having bad shoes (not cushioned enough). You might need to see a doctor as well... Check out the link below.

Shin splints , also referred to as medial tibial stress syndrome, are due to degeneration of the muscles or tissue attaching muscle to the shin bone. If its in the front of the leg its the anterior tibialis; if this on the side/back of the shin its the posterior tibialis.

Causes are typically too many miles w/o enough rest/recuperation, improper biomechanics, and muscle weakness.

Best solutions are rest, icing, stretching, and anti-inflamatory meds.

You can find stretches and other recommendations on running web sites such as Runners World.

My friend was in cross country and complained to the coach that her legs were hurting. The coach said it was shin splints and that she should not run for awhile. The coach also said to stretch out her shins by getting a towel and trying to scrunch it up with her toes as much as she could.

HOPE THIS HELPS!!!!!!

I used to get shin splints in track. running on hard surfaces aggrevates it. If you walk or run on grass you will feel much better and you won't get shin splints.I had to quit track when it got to the point where I couldn't walk the first year. I learned this trick from older track girls. sorry if it doesn't make sense but I'm tired.

Ice them after excercise and stretch them and your calves before. The pain is caused (usually) by a muscle imbalance between the front and back of your lower legs.

Shin Splints? I have never heard of that. I think that is an old wives tale.
