Absolutely correct.
The largest owner of land is the Catholic church. The mormons are getting closer though.
This is all profit and is used to propegate individual faiths. It hardly ever goes into helping the poor or supporting the needy. It goes into keeping the lights on and printing new pamphlets, and donuts to make visitors feel welcome, so they will come back and start paying tithe or giving offerings.
There are an estimated 2.1 Billion Christians in the world. Lets assume that each gives $1 offering per week.
That gives us 2.1 Billion Dollars in offerings each WEEK.
109.2 BILLION dollars per year. That is Billion..........
According to the latest GDP numbers listed in Wikipedia that would be the 58th largest revenue producing country in the world.
Allot of problems could be solved if that money was going towards helping people. The truth is it isn't. Its a sad FACT that religions aren't really about helping people, the money proves it. Religions are really about propegating a belief so that its members feel justified in that belief. That is why money is spent on leaflets and websites instead of food for the hungry.

"Non-profit" merely means the money they collect does not go to individuals. It goes toward benefiting the community.
In addition, churches are largely considered tax exempt under 501(c)3 because the First Amendment is interpreted to mean that the government cannot interfere with religious entities, so taxing them would violate with First Amendment. It has nothing to do with whether they earn a profit or not. They do have to pay taxes on certain unrelated business income.

The churches make a profit, however they are classified as a not for profit organization. What that means is that they are charity, they depend on all of their day to day operation revenue to come from donation from individuals, not from the sales of goods or services. They also are tax exempt because they are a religion.

Contributions from its members, investments, bonds, stocks....although the church is not a for-profit business, the contributions pay the bills, and usually accumulate. The treasurer of the church can make investments that will provide additional income from growth or interest. Plus, when people die, they often leave money to the church of their choice, which again, can be invested.

They totally make a profit, in part because they manage to be 'tax exempt' and rake in the 10% or whatever from parishoners. They're financially savvy.

The Bible says that all believers are required to tithe 10% of all they earn to give to the church. (All in all, that's not very much, but if you have a couple hundred church members it all adds up.) I know in my church, some of that goes toward bills for our facility, some goes toward the pastor's salary (he has to live off something!), some goes to mission funding, etc.

they make a profit....what they are not supposed to do is use the money personally, but use it for the church, to make imporvements to the church, to fund projects (charity etc.) or for facilities + recources.
Sadly tho, i sometimes get the feeling that not all churches use their money correctly.
