Traditionally, the cost of the ring should be equal to two months of your salary.

I can tell you what mine cost and what it is. It was almost 7 thousand, it was a 1.30 caret, with sapphires on the sides about .30 each and then 1/8 caret diamond on the side of that. It is a beautiful princess cut that is nearly colorless. I would suggest going to Zales or Shaws for an engagement ring.

Most guys pick about a 1 carat. They are usually around 6-10 thousand. Try Costco. They have amazing quality diamonds for great prices. Blue Nile is hit and miss. A friend of mine got a stone from them and it was not the carat weight or clarity he ordered. He was able to return it b/c he is a lawyer and threatened to sue them but look closely at there return policy. That is where the catch is.
As far as cut, the trend is princess or ascher. Round is the classic and gives off the most light, think shiny. Good color is hard to tell above g-h color. Nothing below or it will be yellow. You can hide a yellowish stone in yellow gold so use this to your advantage but also beware b/c this is a jeweler trick.
Platinium is nice but stratches easily. It will last forever but that also means maintanence. 14K gold but no 18k. If allergic go to platinium, 18k gold is too soft.
Last point is clarity. VVS is great but what is the point. Stay with VS2 to SI1. You won't see anything is the stone with the naked eye but under a microscope you want to see something. It helps you know that with these marks it is your stone. Some jewelers will switch the stones, so be careful. Get it lasered and know what you stone looks like under a loop or better yet a microscope. Good luck and be aware, they are some bad jewelers out there.

I have not recieved my ring yet but my fiance let me pick mine out. I fell in love with a 2 piece set from the Claddagh House in Toronto. I'm irish so when I seen this I knew that this would be the ring I'd be proud to wear for the rest of my life. The engagement ring is just a heart shaped diamond that fits into the band that has the hands and crown of the claddagh.

My boyfriend and I went together and picked out my ring. We spent close to $450. It was a 1/2 caret multi setting, set in White gold. We did this so we can spend more on the wedding band set. We plan on getting another 1/2 caret band for me and carved band for him.

I got a 1.04ct, D flawless brilliant cut diamond worth $32,000 on a platinum band.

edit-I would like to point out that the diamond market is pretty steady....buying a diamond is definately an investment that you shouldnt lose money on!

Well I'm not a guy but I can tell you what my ring looks like

I have a 2 carot center stone princess cut, with Sapphire side baguettes set in platinum VVS2, F and he paid $23,987 from Adiamor in Los Angeles

However when I was married to my first husband at 21 the cost of our entire wedding set {engagement, wedding band for both} was about 1200. Times they are a changing!

Awe you gave me a thumbs down, is that because your jealous and your husband cant afford what mine can?

engagement rings were ment to be given so the family knows that the man will take care of the bride. It is suppose to hurt the mans wallet. I would say that he should spend at least a months worth of wages on the ring, and if hes not working,,,forget it.
