When you can not supervise the dog crate him. It will keep him from chewing up inappropriate things.
This does not sound like simple teething it sounds more like separation anxiety so he will definitely benefit from crating, a crate will offer him some security once he is accustomed to it.

I definitely know what you are talking about. Your dog is still a puppy and it is going through that stage where anything they see that is in their reach they will try to get it. If they get ahold of it, they will chew on it untill you tell them not to. You should not leave around things in the puppy's reach that he could get ahold of. If you keep on letting this happen, the dog could chew and swallow the item, and depending on what it is, the dog could have to have surgery to get it out. I would go to the pet store and buy him some chew toys that are the perfect strength so your dog will not chew a hole in the toy or one that will be so hard for it to mess with that it will get bored and not play with it. Also leave your dog in a crate when you are not able to tend or watch him. If he already has good toys, then buy him a rawhide every once in awhile. My dog chews up a bunch of things that you can find in the trash and is very happy when I give him a rawhide! It also keeps him from making more of a mess. I hope this information helps you bunches! Have fun with your dachshund also!

Puppies are born into a pack and have litter mates. When separated it can cause separation anxiety.
Even if the dog is not a puppy it can surface later (puppies get a whole lot of attention when small, then as they grow they get a little less)
Getting another dog will greatly help this situation. It will have someone to play with and snuggle with when its sleeping.
This also gives you the opportunity to help a dog in need. Or a humane shelter that has a good reputation.
Try to find a litter mate that has about the same qualities, or is more calm, stable, and slightly submissive. Opposite sex dogs seem to work better in pack structure.
Remember your dog was part of a pack, when you leave he/she has no pack=sep anxiety.

I have 2 doxies and my girl chews everything, even when I'm around. I've tried redirecting her and giving her a chew toy. It doesn't work. She chews beds, cardboard, her "comfie" (bed), my other doxie, anything other than what she's s'possed to. She's 4 months old so I'm hoping that after she's through teething it will stop. I've heard though that doxies need as much exercise and mental stimulation as a German Shepard so maybe teaching them tricks or agility skills would help.

You have a puppy who's teething - that means his gums hurt and all puppies this age chew everything they possibly can. He needs to be crated when no one's home to watch him until he's totally passed the chewing stage.

He needs lots and lots of toys to chew on - all different textures. Try giving him an old face cloth that's been soaked in cold water and frozen - it soothes their gums.

Get him a crate and leave him in that with some toys when you're not there. There are some great websites on crate training. He may be teething.

i agree 100% with the lots of toys, try filling and freezing "kongs" as well. never too many toys, they need to chew they have to chew, so give them something to chew.

i would put up a fence so that if he wants to go outside let him. never leave him alone anymore. there has got to be some way. have some family or friends watch him. maybe neighbors. that way he can't tear up anything at your house and he will still be getting attention.

A rolled up newspaper and a choke collar would do the trick.
