According to the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the credit bureaus have 30 days to investigate a disputed item on your report. They either need to show proof that it is accurate, or if they are unable to find any, they are required to remove the item and send you an updated copy of your report for free.

Yes. When you dispute something with the credit agency, they are required, by law, to notify the creditor. If the creditor fails to respond within a certain time period, the derogatory item must be removed.
