We sneeze to clear our breathing passages. We all have a natural reflex to sneeze whenever a small foreign substance enters our airways. So don’t hold back your sneezes-let ‘em rip!

You have little hairs all up in your nose. Those little hairs are connected to nerves that are, in turn, connected to your brain. When something that isn't supposed to be in your nose touches those little hairs (dirt, etc.) it makes them wiggle. The nerve takes this information back to your brain, letting it know that there are foreign particles in your nostril. Your brain triggers an automatic response, which consists of shooting a blast of air through your nostrils to dislodge the offending item. Thus the sneeze.

To get rid of germs and things, like I currently have a terrible cold and I keep sneezing...same with snot actually. it's brought up to the back of your throat and you cough it up as pleghm or if you swallow it your stomach acid destroys it. All to do with the remarkable wonder of the human body...

If you have a cold it is to clear the nose of excess mucus, but usually it is due to dust etc going up the nose.

Because of irritants in our nose. e.g. pollen has spikes that brush against the hairs in our nostril and in people who are allergic to pollen this evokes an involuntary violent automatic response.
