I have my pug's pedigree, and it looks as though her grandpa on her mother's side,is also her great grandpa. So,her grandma was bred with her own father to produce MY pug's mom. ? Is that acceptable in the show ring? I'm trying to find info on AKC.org but I haven't come up with any answers as of yet. Thanks

Breeders generally line-breed or inbreed in order to concentrate genes for a particularly desirable trait or traits. This also comes with potential problems, because when you concentrate the good, you also concentrate the bad.
Inbreeding is not necessarily a bad thing if the breeder knows what they are doing, but it shouldn't show up a whole bunch in a 4-generation pedigree, and most breeders don't go closer than daughter-grandsire or nephew-aunt. Father to daughter is a little closer than I'd be comfortable with.
That said, breeders who know what they're doing with their lines do it on occasion. The AKC has no rules against this, and it isn't limited just to the show ring -- many people who work their dogs do it, as well. Puppy mills also inbreed, probably more often than anyone else (and without any idea of how it will affect the puppies).
If you're very concerned about it, you should contact your breeder and ask why it was done.
Good luck!

Well you call it inbreeding but the experts call it line breeding. In some cases it is accepted. If done expertly then sometimes it works out. If done without knowledge it is a disaster!
If your pug is OK then dont worry about it. You should read the pedigree very carefully because sometimes they names the dogs twice but has slight differences in spelling or the number. If that is on your pedigree then your dog was not line bred.
It is however allowed in the show ring!

Yes it is very acceptable. It was noted that most reputable breeders do not inbreed, and this is very wrong. Most of the top dogs at Westminster and CRUFT are line/inbred. If you take any dogs pedigree back a few generations you will note that there will be many repeats.
You breeder had a reason to line breed she was trying to concentrate certain traits known in that line. It sounds like she is a reputable breeder and if you ask her what those traits were and what she was trying to accomplish by line breeding, I'm sure she will fill you in!
Line breeding should only be used by a breeder who knows the lines very well and has done research. The dogs should also have received extensive health testing to be sure that they are not doubling up bad traits.

AJ has no Idea what she is talking about, and the AKC has nothing to do with who you breed your dog to, many of our top dogs have been produced by inbreeding. some breeders have even done father, daughter breeding's, but in order to do a breeding that close both specimens would have to be darn near perfect, because you not only double up on the good genes but you double up on the bad ones as well. all breeders do some form of inbreeding! If all you did was out crossing all the time, you would never have a consistent typeness with in the breed.

Yes it is acceptable. Inbreeding, linebreeding and outcrossing are all acceptable. Inbreeding and linebreeding should only ever be done by very experienced breeders who know their lines and know what problems are in back of their dogs.
In the show ring the judges aren't aware of anything about the dog including pedigree..only the armband number of the handler.

There is a fine line between inbreeding and line breeding both of which are common in the show lines BUT only after proper evaluations and health certifications have been performed.

Yes it can be done...but not usually a good idea. Most reputable breeders won't breed within the same lines, because of faults passed on to the puppies. The only reason for breeding is to improve. If you don't know what you are doing, spay or neuter!

Yes, it's acceptable.
Inbreeding should only be attempted by experienced, knowledgeable breeders who are very familiar with the bloodlines and dogs in question and who have an above average knowledge of genetics.
