can i after a year of having a card update it to a better card instead of getting a new one..can that be done?

You can definitely negotiate with your credit card company to see if they offer something...it would be better for your credit history than getting a new card...just make sure that you are paying off your balance each month because some companies are charging higher interest rates on cards that have rewards...
