In Syria The most important Islamic holidays (based on the Islamic lunar calendar) include Eid al-Fitr (the three-day feast at the end of the month of Ramadan), Eid al-Adha (Feast of the Sacrifice, which is held during the annual pilgrimage to Mecca (Makkah) and celebrates Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son), the Birth of the Prophet Muhammad (25 November), and Ashura (the Shiite Day of Atonement).

Christian groups celebrate Easter and Christmas according to their various traditions. For example, Armenian Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas on 6 January, while other Christians celebrate it on 25 December.
