My opinion is, that the dangerous dogs act will only work if the police and the general public work together and the police should have a specific section of officers who, when a member of the public contacts them with proof of a dog behaving dangerously, will go out and remove the dog from that persons care, permanently.

Those people that own more than 1 dog that behaves dangerously should be banned from having dogs for life and if they disobey that, then they should recieve an extremely long prison sentence that isnt suspended.

What do you think?

I did not see the show... BUT I wanted to comment on the subject. I agree in a perfect world this would work, BUT we unfortunately do not live in a perfect world. There needs to be a better way of enforcing animal abuse laws. There are very few states where the humane society has any type of "police" authority. If we could encourage state and local governments to make members of the SPCA and HS authoritive figures with arresting capabilities. this would help enforce these laws. The Sad truth is that the HS and SPCA's are stuck in "long Lines" in court and cannot get the assistance needed from local police before there is minimal amounts of evidence in a case left and the offender gets off with a slap on the wrist and a "Talking To" by a passionate animal control person who they have no interest in listening to. The Best bet for now is Take pictures, be a snoopy snooperton get any info that will assist your local authorities with any evidence you can SAFELY and LEAGALLY collect. Also if we offer more free ways for people to TRAIN their animals there would be less occorances of "dangerous dogs" most of the so-called Dang. Dogs are just Untrained (and in turn) Ignored dogs.

Be a good pet owner spay or nuter, Train, and LOVE your animals.

I think that this is asking for trouble. That means that just anybody can call and say you have a dangerous dog. What happens if you have an enemy who decides to get you by reporting your dog dangerous. What about people who are afraid of dogs and think all dogs are dangerous. I witnessed what cops will do to a pitbull before even seeing if the dog will bite. They unloaded there guns from outside of the fence because it was a pitbull and not for any other reason. Besides for that any dog will act differently towards strangers ecspecially strangers coming into their territory and upsetting their people. This country and the people who are asking for these types of laws need to be careful. We will be called The Land Of People That Need To Mind Their Own Business.

I had an incounter with the humane society because my dog had jumped out of my car when I was at work, she came around to the front of my store and layed there waiting for me, I did not realize this until the animal control officer arrived I knew someting was going on, and I knew it was involving me and my dog. She was totally fine, laying there in the sun, and he began to approach her, a big man, intimidating the way he came towards her, she began to cower and growl and was trying to escape him by walking under the tables outside, I ran out the door and told him to stop because he was scarring her. Once I arrived my dog was wagging her tail and I told her everything was ok, she knew that this man meant no harm to her after I came to the rescue. I told the officer that he should not have approached her as he did, because that is what causes a bad reaction. The officer took my advice and then began to talk to my dog nicely and she responded beautifully, wagging her tail and trying to lick his face.

In some cases an officer will intimidate a dog and their only reaction is to become aggresive, this is how so many dogs get shot is because the animal control have not been properly trained in their work, and take any so called dangerous breed of dog as aggressive because they don't know how to appraoch the senario correctly.

If someone gets bitten, reporting the bite is proof that theres a problem. But just a possible malicious complaint is not enough.
Any dog can be temperament tested by a registered canine behaviour expert. If a dog hasn't bitten anyone, that should be compulsory before any action is taken.

I don't know really,it depends. It can sometimes be the owners fault if the dog turns out cranky and aggressive but then again some dogs are just born with a nasty streak in them.Anyway, animals are animals at the end of the day,you never know when they could turn on you, they cannot reason things out like we can.

There's no way the jail thing will happen realistically-the jails are already overcrowded.

They should get rid of the ban on certain breeds and allow any dog as a pet but make people train them right.

to repeat almost everything everybody has said its not the dog its the owner also its our caring government's fault because they dont seem to have really enforced the dangerous dogs act when it was a popular issue a few years ago.why create an act of parliament then not follow up its recommendations for fear of upsetting irresponsible dog owners and breeders

i think u are so right, the police shud seek out the miss- users, if people cant control their own dog and have either trained it to be aggressive or usin it in an illegal way i.e dog fighting, shud be banned from keepin them cos their just giving the families that may have pit bull type dog bad press, and people that have staffies. if u cant control a dog u shudnt have one!!!
